كتاب زندگی و میراث یکی از نزدیک‌ترین معتمدین محمد (صلي الله عليه واله) و قدیس حامی اسلام: علی بن ابی طالب (عليه السلام) به زبان انگليسي به نويسندگي حسن عباس (Hassan Abbas) توسط انتشارات Yale University Press به زيور طبع آراسته شد.
جان مک هوگو، نویسنده کتاب “مختصری از تاریخ اهل سنت و شیعه” درباره اين کتاب می‌گوید: این کتاب متقن اما خواندنی نشان می‌دهد که چرا نقش علی ابن ابی طالب (عليه السلام) پسرعمو و داماد پیامبراسلام تا این اندازه در اسلام مهم است. علی (عليه السلام) شخصیتی الهام بخش و نمادی از مصالحه است.
علی ابن ابی طالب (عليه السلام) بدون شک مهم‌ترین مرجع معنوی و فکری مسلمانان پس از (حضرت) محمد (صلي الله عليه و آله) است. علی (عليه السلام) با تعالیم فکری و رهبری خود به عنوان خلیفه چهارم، اسلام را رشد داد. اما مسلمانان درمورد اینکه او جانشین سیاسی (حضرت) محمد (صلي الله عليه و آله) است یا نه اختلاف نظر دارند. با این حال او همچنان یک قطب تاثیرگذار در تاریخ اسلام است…
حسن عباس تصویری ظریف و متقاعد کننده از این شخصیت برجسته و در عین حال تفرقه‌انگیز و منشأ اختلاف فرقه‌ای در اسلام ارائه می‌دهد. عباس نشان می‌دهد که چگونه پس از (حضرت) محمد (صلي الله عليه و آله)، علی (عليه السلام) ردای معنوی اسلام را برای رهبری نهضتی که پیامبر رهبری کرده بود به دست گرفت. در حالی که آموزه‌های علی (عليه السلام) در مورد خرد، عدالت و ایثار همچنان توسط مسلمانان شیعه و سنی گرامی داشته می‌شود، ایده‌های کثرت گرایانه او تحت برنامه‌های فرقه‌ای و سیاست‌های قدرت مدفون شده است.
امروز، عباس استدلال می‌کند، میراث و پیام علی (عليه السلام) علیه داعش، القاعده و طالبان است.
